Mini Audition 6.1: automate the whole mixer

6.0 gave lanes a volume and a balance line. 6.1 takes automation to the rest of the mixer, and adds two things people asked about right after.

Automate buses, Master and effects

A reverb that opens up for the chorus. A filter sweeping across a build. The whole mix dipping under a voice-over. Click the curve button on a bus’s or Master’s strip in the mixer: it lists the strip’s volume and every setting of every effect on it, the built-in ones and Audio Units alike. Pick one and its line shows up below the lanes, edited just like a lane’s:

  • click to add a point;
  • drag a point up, down or along;
  • ⌥-click a point to remove it.

You hear it while you draw, it goes into the mixdown, it’s saved with the session, and every change can be undone.

Stretch a clip, keep its pitch

A loop a bit too short for the bar, a line that needs to fit a gap. Open a clip’s Stretch menu (in its details, or by right-clicking it) and pick 50 to 200%, a length in seconds, or Fit to Selection to fill the stretch of time you’ve selected, from a quarter to four times as long. The pitch stays where it was. The clip gets its own audio (the track it came from isn’t touched), its fades stretch with it, and it can be undone.

Updates

Mini Audition now checks mini-audition.com once a day and, when there’s a newer version, says so in the status bar, with links to download it and to see what’s new, or to skip that version. Mini Audition › Check for Updates… asks right away, and Settings › General turns the daily check off. Nothing about you or your audio is sent.

6.1.5 and 6.2: the controls move too

Faders and knobs now follow their automation, as you play and at the cursor when stopped, so you can see what the mix is doing. Automated faders, balance and effect knobs, the EQ’s bands and the compressor’s curve move with their lines, and can’t be turned while they have one, since their own setting isn’t heard then. Audio Units’ own windows keep showing their settings.

In 6.2 a volume line is the volume itself, as in other DAWs: its top is +12 dB and its bottom is silence, whatever the fader was set to, and a new line starts at the fader’s level. Before, it added to the fader, so with the fader down a line at the top still played quietly. Sessions from earlier versions are converted and sound as they did. Lines also stay over the waveforms now, clear of the clips’ names.
